Schema Therapy for Adolescents
Trainer: Christof Loose
Schema Therapy (ST) can be regarded as an enhancement and development of cognitive behavioral therapy, and integrates emotions and also developmental aspects in particular at the centre of their diagnostic and therapeutic considerations. It is also particularly suited to generating action-guiding, diagnostic and therapeutic concepts, especially in the field of adolescent and young adult therapy.
First the schema therapeutic conceptual model (schemas, modes, coping strategies), the underlying theory (central importance core needs in the context of developmental tasks), possible diagnostic means (eg, projective methods) and requirements in the therapeutic attitude (eg, concept of “limited reparenting” and “empathic confrontation”) are outlined, on the basis of temperament and personality factors in adolescence. It is expected that participants have already basic knowledge about individual (adult) Schema Therapy and its basic concepts.
In Schema Therapy for Adolescents the processes of meeting needs for autonomy and self-determination are central. A good rapport is critical in order to effect change in the adolescent. One of the most difficult tasks during therapy is developing a nurturing role toward the adolescent in a way that doesn’t result in the parents’ need to nurture being undermined.
Finally, it is important to note that adolescents need a mix of freedom to decide and specific ideas and clear instructions. The therapist should also be aware that for adolescents, there are some developmentally normal factors that can complicate therapy. Adolescents can have acute feelings of shame in front of peers (‘You have a psychotherapist?’), can lack reliability in engaging with therapy (‘I can’t talk about that today/don’t ask me to go there today’) and have varying levels of motivation to engage in therapy (‘I can do this on my own, I didn’t ask to come to therapy’). Therefore, if the adolescent does not honour commitments, the therapist needs to be mindful not to present as a Demanding Parent (‘I am disappointed, you promised to come’). The therapist’s ‘door’ should always be open, even if the clinician does not feel appreciated or accepted. This unconditional positive regard is recognised by adolescents and can enable them to come back at a later stage.
WHAT WILL PARTICIPANTS LEARN?
The workshop offers many practical demonstrations through picture and video material or live demonstrations, and small exercises allow the participants to transfer the content into their own practice.
